Should be able to see when connected to vpn without relaunching the app on iPhone.

On every iOs Status bar up-screen close to the clock or battery you have a vpn icon that is present when the device is connected successfully through a VPN what ever the provider is.

You can see I if connected when you pull down control centre on top right of screen
